ADOPT-A-JUNIOR DAY

Adopt-A-Junior-Day was established in 2007 and has been running each year since. This is where our Junior players (generally the U11’s and below) are “buddied” up with a Premier 1 Player for the week.

The Premier 1 Players hang out with their Junior Buddies for the hour or two prior to their match, giving the kids the chance to see close up, the preparation of the senior players for their game, including stretching and warm-up. The Juniors get to join in with these activities, and then run onto
the field with their mentors for the match.

The Juniors also get to join in the half time talk and (hopefully) sing the Club Song with the ‘Big Boys’ after the win!

This has proven to be an enjoyable day for Players, both young and old, Parents and our Old Boys who get to see the future of our club alongside our current ‘stars’.

HAWKS NETBALL

We have an U15 Girls netball team playing in the Newcastle Netball comp this year. The team is made up of netballers that became Hawks rugby players and are now also Hawks Netballers!

We say NO to Domestic Violence

The Hamilton Rugby Club community continued to grow in 2018 through an alliance with Got Your Back Sista, a local charity whose vision is to see women and their children happy, thriving and living independently after escaping the trauma of domestic violence.

Long term Hawks supporter Jan Bynon made the initial connection between Hawks Juniors & Got Your Back Sista: “I was looking at all the families there and thought ‘This would be a good way to get a message out about teaching children about respect for women and themselves,” Ms Bynon said.

All Hawks Juniors players proudly display the “Say no to domestic violence” message on their Hawks training kit, players & parents featured in our media launch video. The Hawks Juniors committee saw this as a natural fit for the development of our children. Vice President Gerry Mason said: “It’s more
than just getting kids a game of Rugby For us it’s about putting good some values into kids as well, and teaching kids that playing a game of Ruby is great (but) winning isn’t everything. We want them to learn some stuff not only about Rugby, but about what a decent person does.”

Hawks Juniors President Ben McMillan said the family-oriented club hoped to broaden involvement beyond the players aged five to 16 to the seniors too.
“I think it’s never too young to start conversations with kids. They need to know if they see or experience violence it’s not acceptable, should not be happening and they can speak to people at the club about it.”

2019 will see further strengthening of the relationship between the two organisations, with more involvement this year not just with the Juniors but the Hamilton Rugby Club as a whole across Premier Mens, Womens, Boys & Girls Teams.

Hawks stand shoulder to shoulder with Got Your Back Sista, domestic violence is never OK.
